A Trail of Legacy: Ten Landmarks, One Shared Heritage

At the break of dawn on 11 July 2026, 250 members and their families arrived full of excitement to take part in the Lam Ann Association’s Centennial Celebration Series Activity No. 7, “Journeying Through Nan’an’s Architectural Heritage.” Together, they explored 10 local heritage sites over a century old, gaining insight into Singapore’s early history and multicultural character.

With a wave of the flag by Guest of Honour Mr Baey Yam Keng, Minister of State for the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and the Ministry of Transport, and Mayor of the North East District, and a sounding of the horn by Association President Neo Kah Kiat, eight tour buses carried the group off on a day-long journey!

The sites visited included the multi-religious Kampong Malacca Al-Falah Mosque, Sri Mariamman Temple, Thian Hock Keng Temple, Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery, St. Andrew’s Cathedral, and Wesley Methodist Church; the culturally rich Victoria Concert Hall and The Arts House; the Chinese Weekly Entertainment Club, a community organisation from the early Chinese community; and Fort Canning Park, notable for both its historical significance and natural scenery.

The Association also invited beneficiaries from Shaping Hearts to paint each site – the resulting 10 artworks were vivid and showed exceptional artistic skill.

The packed day-long journey came to a fulfilling close in the evening, as everyone gathered at the Lam Ann Association to enjoy a hearty barbecue dinner, adding a beautiful chapter to this deeply meaningful centennial celebration.

It will be demolished by the end of this year and rebuilt as a new 10-storey building. Before demolition, the association recycled part of the building’s construction materials and had artists transform them into 20 artworks, preserving their spirit and memory. Created around the theme of “transformation, flow, return, and roots,” the works honour the dedication and contributions of past generations to the association’s growth, while also expressing gratitude and appreciation for the current building’s long service as it makes way for the new. Going forward, these artworks will be displayed throughout the new building for all to enjoy.
